Season: Summer (May–Jun)

The CB 13 & CB 14 Expedition is a serious technical mountaineering objective located deep in the Chandra Valley of Spiti, an area known for extreme remoteness, unstable weather systems, and long operational days. These peaks are not commercial or frequently attempted summits. They demand expedition-grade planning, precise acclimatization, and disciplined execution.

From Terranova Expedition’s experience in the CB region, the defining challenge is not just altitude, but sustained exposure combined with logistical isolation. Once the expedition moves beyond Batal, external support disappears completely. Weather forecasts are unreliable, evacuation options are extremely limited, and every decision made on the mountain carries weight.

The dual-peak structure of CB 13 and CB 14 adds another layer of complexity. While CB 14 is climbed first as part of acclimatization and route familiarization, CB 13 stands taller and more demanding—both technically and psychologically. This sequence is intentional and based on real expedition learning: success on CB 13 depends heavily on how efficiently CB 14 is approached and recovered from.

The terrain involves:

  • Long glacier approaches
  • Crevassed sections requiring rope discipline
  • Steep snow slopes and exposed ridgelines
  • Prolonged cold and wind exposure

Another defining feature of this expedition is time spent above 5,000 meters. Unlike fast 6,000-meter climbs, CB 13 & 14 require trekkers to operate, recover, and make decisions repeatedly in thin air. Appetite loss, disturbed sleep, and cumulative fatigue are not exceptions here—they are expected realities.

This expedition is not suited for first-time 6,000-meter climbers. It is designed for trekkers who already understand high-altitude behavior and are now ready to apply that knowledge in a true expedition environment, where adaptability and judgment matter as much as strength.

Terranova Expedition approaches CB 13 & 14 conservatively. Summit attempts are treated as outcomes of correct process—not targets to be forced. This philosophy has proven essential in such a remote and unforgiving landscape.

Why climb CB 14 before CB 13?

CB 14 acts as acclimatization, route familiarization, and performance assessment.

What is the biggest challenge on this expedition?

Remoteness, sustained altitude exposure, and technical glacier terrain.

How cold does it get at summit camp?

Temperatures often fall below –20°C, with significant wind chill.

How does CB 13 & CB 14 Expedition help future expeditions?

It builds confidence and altitude discipline required for 6,500 m and higher objectives.

What is the trekking distance of the expedition?

Total travel distance is 38–45 km including approach, ascent and descent.

  • Stair climbing with backpack (10–20 floors/day)
  • Strength workouts for legs and core
  • Practice hikes carrying 8–10 kg backpack
Can someone with no climbing experience attempt this expedition?
